Knee-Jerk Reaction (RAW 11/07/11)
I love it when WWE broadcasts from other countries. The fans there are usually so much more rowdy because it's not an everyday (or every year, for that matter) event for them. WWE is already touting the "history" card because this is the first time they've ever held RAW in Liverpool. First doesn't make history - best makes history. WWE should focus on making the best shows they possibly can, not the first. But then again, by proxy, the first is technically the best. It's also technically the worst...
WHAT I LIKED:
Morrison vs Ziggler: Wow! Morrison wins. Who would have... who could have thought? This coming on the heels of rumors circulating that he and Melina have broken up. If that was all he needed to finally end his losing streak, he should have done it a long time ago. Backstage politics aside, it's about damn time they allowed Morrison to get back to his winning ways. He rung in this year with a stellar match against The Miz for the WWE Championship. I thought for sure he'd only get better from there. Morrison is a talent that WWE can't afford to lose. He'd likely go to another company like TNA and become a mega-star with all the talent he has. See what happens when you play nice with the Guest Hosts and Hornswoggle? I only hate his revival had to come at the expense of Dolph Ziggler, the United States Champion, of whom I don't understand why is losing so much lately. I hope it's not more politics.
Swagger vs Santino: No Muppets. No cobra. No silliness. Just a straight match with a clean submission finish. All is right with the world again! For now, at least.
Kevin Nash: What's this? A decent promo from Nash? This absolutely has to go in the LIKE category. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking forward to any kind of match that Kevin Nash is in, but as far as hype goes, he's two-for-two since his return. I liked (and agree) with Nash about the Royal Rumble, albeit he has to know that a lot of that pop had to do with surprise from the audience. I popped at home due to the same reasons, but it's not because I actually liked the guy. I do have to criticize one thing, however: "Not only do I get a 'no', but I don't even receive a response." I'm pretty sure the word 'no' is a response.
Cena/Ryder vs Miz/Truth: Thanks for the boos, Liverpool! And for the "Wee Want Ryder" chants. Cena could barely throw a punch in this match before they called for Ryder. And the "Cena Sucks" chants. It's always nice to hear the crowd give Cena what he so rightly deserves. I appreciate WWE finally utilizing Zack Ryder, but calling him a future Hall of Famer is a bit much. Also, how ironic is it that WWE is having to rely on Ryder's popularity to give Cena a boost? Ryder & Cena are the poster children for how to make it in WWE, but in two completely different ways. Ryder worked to get himself over via the internet and gained a cult following online despite constantly being overlooked and undervalued. Cena caught fire with a timely gimmick and subsequently got everything handed to him because he sells merchandise to kids. I really wasn't expecting Ryder & Cena to lose this match, let alone for Cena to be the one to get pinned. But then again, it took two guys to do it, so they're still protecting the guy.
WHAT I HATED:
Mason Ryan vs JTG: Just when I give credit to Liverpool for booing John Cena, they go and cheer for this meathead. I'm sure Vince is going to take this one-time positive reaction and assume he's ready for the main-event. I have him as World Champion by this time next year.
Team Orton vs Team Barrett: Why the fuck is Cody Rhodes on Team Barrett? Cody Rhodes should be on Team Rhodes. Wade Barrett should be on Team Rhodes. Basically what I'm saying is Cody Rhodes > Wade Barrett. I suppose I can't hate WWE for giving Wade Barrett a well-deserved push, but it shouldn't come at the expense of the Intercontinental Champion.
Del Rio vs Kingston: Poor Kofi. I knew Evan Bourne's suspension would affect him negatively. He didn't do anything wrong. If nothing else, at least they allowed Del Rio to look strong in this match. Too bad it came at the expense of yet another reigning Champion. This seems to be a trend...
Punk/Del Rio:This Alberto Del Rio vs CM Punk rivalry isn't anywhere near as exciting as it would have been if WWE had run with it directly after Summerslam, when Del Rio had gained a lot of momentum after cashing in MITB. But instead WWE decided that Punk needed to face Kevin Nash and that John Cena needed to win the WWE Championship for the umpteenth time, and they completely ruined this matchup. I thought they had a good thing going by having Punk jump through hoops in order to get this match, but they ended that abruptly last week. I'm sure the match itself at Survivor Series will be awesome, but the build-up has been anything but entertaining. Can WWE just paint a bulls-eye on Ricardo Rodriguez? Everytime he's in the ring, you know he's going to bite the bullet for Del Rio. It's already getting old.
Kelly Kelly: From Muppets to Maxim, eh WWE? They'll pimp out anything if it'll gain them notoriety and money. Remember when they used to go through all of this trouble for Playboy? Good times. But I do have to question the logic of introducing a Maxim magazine cover in the United Kingdom when the magazine will be released in the United States. The UK has their own Maxim division. Hell, the UK has far better lad-mags than the US altogether. Have you ever seen Zoo or Nuts or Loaded? They're AWESOME!!! I doubt anyone there is too excited for Maxim.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT: "It's a match that has been anticipated for a long time." - Rey Mysterio
He's talking about the Rock vs Cena match at Wrestlemania XXVIII, of course. And he couldn't be more wrong. I have only been anticipating this match since February 15th, 2011... because that's the day The Rock returned to WWE for the first time in seven years. Because that's the day that That Rock called out John Cena and forever correlated Cena to Fruity Pebbles. Because it doesn't take a genius to figure out that this match would happen eventually. I don't know if I'd count 8 months as a long time.
And how annoying is it going to be having to hear WWE lament about how quickly Wrestlemania tickets sold out? It's still five months 'til Wrestlemania XXVIII and that's how long we're going to have to hear about it. That's definitely going to seem like a long time.
